Saint Michael the Archangel: history, devotion and prayer of protection

· 10 min read

Saint Michael the Archangel is one of the most venerated figures in Christian tradition, recognized as the chief of the heavenly hosts and defender of the Church. His name means "Who is like God?".

The Prayer of Pope Leo XIII

The famous prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel has a mystical origin. In 1884, Pope Leo XIII had a terrifying vision of demonic forces threatening the Church. Following this, he composed the prayer and ordered it to be recited at the end of Mass:

"Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen."

The "Little Exorcism"

Leo XIII also wrote a longer text known as the "Little Exorcism". Unlike the "Great Exorcism" (reserved for priests), this text was intended as a prayer of protection and deliverance for the use of the faithful, although the Church clarifies that it is a prayer of supplication and not a sacramental rite.
