The Stations of the Cross: guide to pray the 14 stations

The Via Crucis ("Way of the Cross") is a devotion that consists of spiritually walking the 14 stations of the Passion and death of Jesus, from Pilate's condemnation to the tomb.

The 14 Stations

  1. Jesus is condemned to death.
  2. Takes up his cross.
  3. Falls the first time.
  4. Meets his Mother.
  5. Simon of Cyrene helps him.
  6. Veronica wipes his face.
  7. Falls the second time.
  8. Consoles the women.
  9. Falls the third time.
  10. Is stripped of his garments.
  11. Is nailed to the cross.
  12. Dies on the cross.
  13. Is taken down from the cross.
  14. Is laid in the tomb.

Meaning and How to Pray It

The goal is not just to remember a historical fact, but to unite our own suffering to the sacrifice of Jesus. At each station the number is announced, it is said: "We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world", followed by meditation and silent prayer, contemplating the infinite love of God who gave Himself for our salvation.
