Saint Joseph: history, devotion and prayers of the Custodian of the Redeemer

· 11 min read

The figure of Saint Joseph, Custodian of the Redeemer, occupies a central place in Catholic tradition as the silent but decisive protector of the plan of salvation, husband of Mary, and adoptive father of Jesus.

The Saint of Silence

Saint Joseph is known as the "Saint of Silence" since no words of his are recorded in the Scriptures. His prominence is revealed through his works and his obedience to divine commands received in dreams, such as the flight into Egypt.

Universal Patronages

Recognized as a "just man" and carpenter of Nazareth, Pope Pius IX declared him Patron of the Universal Church in 1870. He is also the patron saint of workers, of a happy death (having died alongside Jesus and Mary), and of families.

The Custodian of the Redeemer

In the apostolic exhortation Redemptoris Custos, Saint John Paul II emphasized that, just as he cared for the Holy Family, Saint Joseph guards the Church today. Pope Francis describes him as a "father with a father's heart", a model of tenderness.

Prayer to Saint Joseph

"Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only Son; in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man. Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. Amen."
