Confession: complete guide to the Sacrament of Reconciliation

· 12 min read

The Sacrament of Reconciliation (or Confession) is a path of healing and encounter with the mercy of God. The Catholic Church proposes four fundamental steps to receive this sacrament:

1. Examination of Conscience

Before going to the priest, it is necessary to reflect on thoughts, words, and actions since the last confession. Many people use the Ten Commandments as a guide for this inner review.

2. Contrition (or Repentance)

It is the sorrow of the soul and the rejection of the sins committed, together with the firm purpose of amendment to not sin again and to avoid the occasions of sin. It is considered the most important step of all.

3. Confession of Sins

It consists of telling the sins to the priest in a clear, humble, and honest way. It begins with "Bless me, Father, for I have sinned...", followed by the account of the faults. At the end, the Act of Contrition is prayed and the priest pronounces the Absolution.

4. Penance (or Satisfaction)

After hearing the confession, the priest will assign a penance (a prayer, work of charity, or act of reparation) to help repair the damage caused and start a new path of conversion. There is no need to be afraid; confession is a sacrament of joy and liberation.
